Annual Chapter Highlight Report 2000-2001

North Dakota Chapter 2000-2001

By Phil Schmid, Past President

Executive Summary

Each year NDHFMA continues to deliver quality services to its members.  This year was no exception.  Our chapter focused on high quality education with emphasis placed on marketing the “Fun” that goes along with learning through the NDHFMA network and educational programs.

With the ever-changing health care industry our chapter provided education updates in areas like APC’s, HIPPA, the revenue cycle, compliance and other reimbursement related changes.  We provided workshops with national speakers and experts from within our own state chapter.  In reviewing educational performance in registration hours per member, the ND chapter exceeded the Charles F. Mehler Gold standard by more than 50%.  Our chapter on average, provided 25.28 hours of education to each member! Those hours were provided at a total of 6 sponsored or co-sponsored educational opportunities throughout the state and region.  The Tri-State meeting with South Dakota, Wyoming and North Dakota chapters in July 2000, was an example of superior educational success.   This meeting was recognized at the national level, with a presentation of the Helen M. Yerger award to each participating chapter.

As part of our chapter communication and networking goal, we issued four member newsletters and a membership directory.  The chapter leadership feels that both the newsletters and membership directory provide a valuable resource in networking with our peers throughout the state.  Along with these publications, the History committee put together a portable bulletin board to display and recognize chapter activities held throughout the year!

Membership stability is a focus on both the national and local levels.  Our chapter membership fell 3.85%.  This trend was even greater on the national level.  Our goal this year was to maintain membership.  May 1st, 2000 our state membership totaled 156.  Our ending count totaled 150.

This year our chapter was recognized with a Bronze level award for member certification.  7.05% of our members are certified.  The Bronze award was presented to chapters with certified members greater than the mean and less than one standard deviation of that mean.

To maintain the chapter’s charter, there are a number of minimum requirements.  As a chapter we met all of those, that included:

  1. Annual Election Notification
  2. Annual Operating Budget
  3. Self-Assessment
  4. Strategic Planning
  5. Annual Report
  6. IRS Form 990
  7. Founders Award Maintenance
  8. Membership Directory
  9. 4 Chapter Board Meetings
  10. Current copy of Constitution and Bylaws
  11. Representation at the Fall Presidents Meeting
  12. Representation at the Leadership Training Conference
  13. 4 Member Communications
  14. 4 Chapter Educational Programs

Congratulations to all the members who participated in putting together a successful year of programs and activities which enhanced knowledge of healthcare financial management for 150 members and many others throughout the state.
